The video shows a 360-degree photomontage of the situation on Christophstrasse at midday on 6 March 1945, when the Americans marched into Cologne. During the advance, three German cars were shot down in the Christophstrasse / Von-Werth-Strasse area. Katharina Esser, 26 years old, was in one of the cars. The driver, her boss, was immediately fatally shot, she herself was seriously injured and was briefly treated by US soldiers lying next to the car, visible in the clip. However, she succumbed to her serious injuries shortly afterwards.
Two American tanks are moving up in the visible scene, US soldiers are walking around, a total of 3 shot down cars are standing on the crossroads.
The montage was created by combining various photos from the NARA archive and, where photos were missing, they were retouched as closely as possible to reality. The montage is intended as a realistic approximation of the situation at the time, without being accurate to the metre.
